Colours that Calm

Posted by Andrew Mear

Did you know that the ‘happiness receptors’ in human eyes are incredibly sensitive to blue? Think about it, what is more joyful that a beautiful blue sky or even a deep blue ocean?

With this in mind, blue is apparently the interior colour of choice for homes – particularly bedrooms – creating a happy, calming environment.

Mellow yellows and soft greens are also winning shades for homeowners looking to boost their wellbeing and promote a feeling of calm and serenity.

Whether it’s a statement wall or carefully selected accessories, the right shades within a home can enhance much more than wellbeing.

We’re big fans of colour and whether it’s indoor or outdoor décor, we’re stocking collections to bring happiness and joy to your home!

Our pick of the best to boost are:

- A rug can be the final piece to pull a room together. We love the Payton Deep Pile Rug which just so happens is available in a range of delightful shades including, navy, emerald green and a soft mustard!

- For a little pattern the Tanvi Teal Cushion features a printed geometric design. We love the idea of layering the Tanvi with the Monza to create an interior-design led look.

- An accent chair is ideal for cosy corners and smaller areas. The Chloe DG Chinois Jade Chair is gorgeous on its own or merged into an existing sofa-scape.

THE REAWAKENING

After what seems like a very long winter and an even longer lockdown, this week marks a fantastic reawakening for us at The Home Company.

Opening again for the for the first time after closing in the depths of January, we’re incredibly excited to welcome back our customers and show them our revamped first floor showroom and latest new lines!

Shopping, being able to size up furniture and having the opportunity to speak to someone in an actual shop are things that make the high street such a special place – and in preparation for reopening - our team have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the first trip to us is an exciting one.

The home has certainly become a bit of a sanctuary over the past year, one where we can feel safe and protected against what was going on outside, but also a place, which in some cases, may need a little TLC or a bit of a revamp.

That’s where we come in.

Our team have re-curated our spacious showroom to ensure you’re able to view and get a feel of the things you really want to see! The High Corn Mill creates the perfect backdrop for our incredible collections and allows plenty of room for our customers to browse and feel safe.

Brand new room sets enhance our furniture collections – with big must-have British brands taking centre stage, including Alston and Swyft. And of course, our gorgeous

local brands are still here too – including the Yorkshire RAM and Making Waves Woodwork.

We’re here to help and advise on the best ways to style a room, how to make the most of the space you have – and importantly – how to care for your new furniture.

Afterall – nothing beats the feeling of going to the shops!!

CREATE THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR ESCAPE

The welcome news that we can finally invite friends and family into our garden – albeit as per the government’s rules – has definitely got us thinking about how we can make our outdoor space more appealing!

It may now be officially spring, but it’s still rather chilly if you ask us! So, turning the ‘bringing the outdoors in’ on its head, we’re all about ‘taking the indoors out’ and creating a lovely cosy (and warm!) outdoor sanctuary for you to enjoy. After having a garden spruce up – sweeping up debris, picking out weeds and having a general tidy, what else can help you to make your space more appealing while entertaining?

Here are our top tips:

1. Accessorise!

Accessories are your best friend, particularly warm throws and lots of soft cushions. A lovely basket can store all your outdoor essentials and be easily transported outside when your guests arrive, ready to save the day when it turns cold. Our Milini Vienna Grey Pom Pom throw is the perfect shade for the garden, whether it is elegantly draped over the back of a chair or wrapped around your guests to keep them warm; while our Bingham Mustard cushion offers vibrancy as well as doubling up as a soft seating accessory.

2. Dress to impress

A beautifully dressed table doesn’t have to be saved for indoors. For the momentous occasion of seeing your friends and family – who you may not have seen for months – go all out!

A vase with an array of spring flowers placed in the center of your outdoor table will look glorious and welcoming, while a carefully considered candle or scented candle display will create a wonderful atmosphere. Our locally produced Yorkshire RAM collection of candles offers a scent for every occasion, while our Giant Champagne Cork Holder requires no introduction – and who needs an excuse for a few bubbles?!

3. Go Natural

Create a relaxed atmosphere for your guests with a décor palette inspired by nature. We are particular fans of the Malini Zen Green Rectangular cushion, which features a calming print in a beautiful shade while the Juniper Mini Hares cushion is one of our latest new lines with a print inspired by wildlife and the great outdoors.

Our Baa Stool collection is crafted from Welsh wool and is the perfect addition outdoors, or in. The footstool range can be easily brought outside for your guests to prop their feet – or double up as a small seat for younger guests. Available in a selection of colours and finishes, the Baa Stool brand is quite the conversation starter!

We’ve all waited so long to get together with family and friends that making it memorable when we do reunite is going to be an extra-special occasion – so don’t be afraid to go for it and really celebrate the moment!

The team at Skipton’s furniture store – The Home Company – can’t wait to welcome you back!

To celebrate, we’re extending our discount code for soft furnishings & lighting until May 24th- offering 10% off! Make sure to use or quote code 'SNUGGLE' at checkout or at the till.

Michelle, Joyce, Vicky and Linda look forward to seeing you from 10am on Monday April 12th.

While we’ve really missed you all during the latest lockdown, we’ve taken the opportunity to revamp our first floor showroom which now showcases a host of exciting new products including the new, industrial-feel dining collection, Laval, which features accents of steel softened with graceful tones of sub-tropical Acacia wood.

Nestled in historic High Corn Mill, just off the High Street, our beautifully presented store is not only full of character and charm but offers a reassuringly spacious showroom in which to browse all the latest furniture and furnishings you’ll need to transform your home, as well as a host of gift ideas. In fact, you’ll discover endless temptation across our extensive 4450sq ft store.

From the super-sleek Swyft sofas designed to fit through any doorway (and assemble in less than five minutes) to our amazing range of on-trend cork accessories, new Russian-doll style storage stools plus top brand bedroom, living and dining accessories, we have it all!

At The Home Company, you can even ‘Go Bespoke’ when it comes to buying a new bed and choose one that exactly matches your own needs and specifications.

Or for those living in homes with difficult access, our new mattress-in-a-bag features up to 4000 pocket springs and a luxurious cashmere topper.

We’re particularly committed to bringing you locally crafted goods from a range of ‘Yorkshire Artisans’ such as The Yorkshire Ram selection of hand poured soy wax candles, made locally in Skipton.

We do ‘quirky high quality’ too: take a look at our unique spinning MOVA globes which combine power from ambient light and torque from the earth’s magnetic field to create soothing rotations.

If it’s art you’re after, then how about a stunning limited edition signed print by local artist Victoria Alderson. Our lighting is pretty artful as well, with this of-the-moment tripod floor lamp just one example of the great choice on offer Add in throws, cushions, mirrors, clocks and rugs and you can be sure we have just about everything you’d ever need to refresh your home – from top to bottom!

We’re incredibly proud to have thrived for over 30 years thanks to our belief in bringing together contemporary furniture and accessories displayed in an inspirational way. But all this is just a tiny taster of the full treasure-trove of goodies to be found across the store.

While a wide range of goods is available from our all-new website www.thehomecompany.co.uk nothing beats a leisurely mooch in the shop itself. So, with the shopping lockdown about to be lifted, we hope to see you very soon!

We’re open from April 12th, returning to normal opening hours from the 19th  Tuesday to Saturday 10-5pm and Sundays 12 – 4pm (Mondays - Closed)

Style Your Zoom Backdrop!

Posted by Andrew Mear

The Zoom backdrop has become a bit of a thing since the switch to working from home in 2020. Over the months we’ve poured over our colleague’s backgrounds to try and get a gauge of what makes them tick and some of us may have switched-up our décor to make our Zoom setting somewhat more appealing.

We’ve created a list of top tips to help you style the ultimate video call backdrop!

Lighting

Probably the most important thing is the lighting. Not only can it enhance the way you look – giving you the sort of ethereal glow you could only dream of under office strip-lighting – but it can be the base of the perfect background.

Don’t be afraid to switch in different lighting choices depending on the time of day.

During the day natural light can assist in creating a relaxed and calming space, so keep your artificial lighting simple with an elegant lamp. Our Marble Footed White and Gold Retro Lamp offers clean lines with a hint of the Art Deco period without being too fussy – perfect for your daytime backdrop.

Our White Embossed Geo Tall Ceramic Table Lamp is another great option for AM meetings.

As you head into later day calls why not introduce a little more glamour? Our Black and Gold Diffused Tripod Floor Lamp is absolutely gorgeous and almost sculpture-like. Offering some serious backdrop interest, warm lighting tones are enhanced with the gold backdrop to help you to keep look fresh as night-time looms.

As daytime turns to night, you’re most likely to be catching up with family and friends, maybe you’re enjoying a glass of something and you’re feeling super-relaxed. The Ceramic Textured Bottle Lamps are available in gold and silver and feature a black shade which can create just the right relaxed mood.

Clean the Clutter

There’s nothing worse than a busy backdrop. Not only can it divert attention from the call in hand – but it can look unprofessional.

The best solution for clutter is to first have a little sort-out (see our last blog on de-cluttering) but for those items worth keeping, a simple bookcase or shelving solution will do just the trick.

Our bookcase selection features a selection of options to suit most spaces.

Wall Art

A sophisticated piece of artwork can pull your interior together – all while adding a little interest to your Zoom meeting.

Keep your room polished by picking out pieces with hints of colour from your existing furniture and furnishings – this will pull everything together.

Whether it’s a geometric design or something a little softer – local artist Victoria Alderson has created a capsule collection for The Home Company featuring beautiful landscapes and animals from in and around the Yorkshire Dales. With a delicate colour palette they’re a real conversation starter
